Acupuncture Indication List | WHO Conditions | Zelhem

No waiting list |   NVA certified & BIG-registered |   Partially covered by health insurance |   24+ years of experience

The World Health Organization (WHO) has compiled, based on clinical research, a list of complaints and conditions that may respond positively to acupuncture. This list covers more than 100 conditions across virtually all organ systems.

Acupuncture works both curatively (aimed at recovery) and preventively (to prevent complaints). At Praktijk ter Horst in Zelhem and Zutphen, we have been treating people with a wide range of complaints for more than 24 years — from neck pain and stress to menopausal complaints and skin problems.

No GP referral required Free introductory consultation of 15–20 min. Treatment as a complement or alternative
Acupuncture needles – fine needles on a calm surface

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine (0.2–0.3 mm) and virtually painless

What does the WHO indication list mean for you?

The WHO list is based on clinical scientific research worldwide. The fact that a condition is on the list means that positive treatment results have been demonstrated. Acupuncture works complementarily alongside regular care — it does not replace your GP or specialist, but can support recovery and reduce complaints.

Is your condition not listed? This list is not exhaustive. Feel free to contact us — we are happy to discuss whether acupuncture may be beneficial for your situation.

Frequently asked questions about the indication list

No. The WHO indication list is a guideline based on clinical research, but acupuncture can also be beneficial for other conditions. If you are unsure, you are always welcome to schedule a no-obligation introductory consultation to discuss whether acupuncture is suitable for your situation.

Most supplementary health insurance policies cover part of the cost of acupuncture treatments. The exact amount varies by policy (usually 15–20 treatments per year). Check your policy terms or contact your insurer. A GP referral is not required.

This varies by condition and by person. For acute complaints, improvement is often noticeable after 3–6 treatments. Chronic conditions generally require a longer course of 8–15 treatments. During the initial intake consultation, we will discuss a realistic treatment plan for your situation.

Acupuncture needles are very fine (0.2–0.3 mm; by comparison, an injection needle is 0.8 mm). You can barely feel the insertion. You may sometimes experience a slight tingling or heavy sensation at the needle point — this is a sign that the treatment is working. Most patients actually find an acupuncture treatment relaxing.

Yes. Acupuncture combines excellently with regular care, physiotherapy or medication. It works complementarily and does not replace your GP or specialist. We are happy to collaborate with other healthcare providers and can inform your treating practitioner at your request.
